Title:Academic Advisor/TRIO Student Support Services
Reports to:Director of Student Support Services

Duties and Responsibilities:

STATUS:  Full time, exempt

LENGTH OF EMPLOYMENT: 11-month continuing position

JOB OVERVIEW: The Academic Advisor acts as a liaison for the TRIO-Student Support Services department. The advisor supports several critical areas for advancement in higher education. This includes class schedule advisement, degree completion, career and the transfer process to 4-year institutions, and more as required under TRIO guidelines.


  • Provide academic advising for program participants
  • Assist students with personal development skills
  • Assist students with career planning
  • Assist students with financial aid forms and procedures
  • Provide financial literacy education
  • Assist students in transferring to a four-year college/university
  • Maintain accurate paperwork and student files
  • Recruit program participants from student body
  • Maintain monthly contracts with program participants
  • Assist in planning and implementing student activities
  • Maintain all necessary files and documentation

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:


  • Knowledge of academic and career assessment instruments
  • Knowledge of careers and education/training needed to reach those careers
  • Knowledge of financial aid programs and application procedures
  • Demonstrated ability to relate to a diverse population
  • Exhibit excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Demonstrate proficient computer skills
  • Knowledge of scholarship availability is a plus
  • Demonstrated willingness and ability to act ethically and socially responsible
  • Bachelor's degree required in administration, counseling, education or related field
  • Minimum of two years' experience providing counseling and/or academic advisement


  • Must be able to stoop, bend, and lift up to 25 pounds
  • Must be flexible to work hours best suited for the success of the program
  • Primary location: Three Rivers Port Campus
