Connors claims Champion Carload Team


Connors State College claims Champion Carload Team at National Western Stock Show for Second Consecutive Year2013 College Livestock Judging

WARNER, OKLAHOMA, Jan. 24, 2013 – The Connors State College (CSC) livestock judging team claimed the Junior College Champion Carload Team title at the National Western Stock Show (NWSS) in Denver, Colo., in addition to a third high team overall finish in the livestock judging contest. Team member Garrett Foote had an impressive contest, as well, claiming third high individual, overall.

With team member Tyler Mackey’s fifth-place finish and Clay Carlson’s tenth in the Carload Contest, CSC won first place honors by a one-point margin over second place Black Hawk College – East, Kewanee, Ill.

Winning this contest marks the second year in a row for CSC to take Junior College Champion Carload Team honors.

“Given that the NWSS Carload Contest is a historic, one-of-a-kind competition, Connors is proud to take home this trophy and carry on the tradition that the contest represents,” said Carlson, of Stoneham, Colo.

Foote, of Texico, N.M., was Connors’ top scorer, finishing first in beef cattle and beef cattle reasons, fourth high individual in sheep, second high individual in oral reasons, and third high individual, overall. Carlson finished fourth in beef cattle and oral reasons, and was named fifth high individual, overall.

Based on the collective team score, CSC came in as the third high team overall, finishing second to Redlands Community College and Black Hawk College – East, respectively. 

Coached by Brandon Gunn and Dodge Nichols, livestock judging team members include: Foote; Carlson; Mackey, of Blum, Texas; Dakota Moyers, Newcastle, Okla.; Jacob McKillip Lafayette, Ind.; Ian Schaefer, Garden City, Texas; Cassie Godwin, Prescott, Ark.; Brad Isbell, Braggs, Okla.; Trey Lockhart, Haworth, Okla.; Josh Walton, Opelika, Ala.; Brazos Williams, Memphis, Texas; Matthew Murdoch, Marion, Texas; and Gavin Wisecarver, Frankfort, Mo.

The team competes next on Feb. 8, 2013, at the Southwestern Livestock Exposition in Fort Worth, Texas.
